1- Popular Tamil director R.C Sakthi passes away

Tamil director R.C Sakthi

Popular Tamil director R.C Sakthi passed away in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He was 76. He was mentor of famous actor Kamal Haasan and had launched him as lead role in his Tamil directorial debut Unarchigal in 1972.

About R.C Sakthi

  • Sakthi was born in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu.
  • He had started his career in film industry as a theatre artist and later shifted to cinema.
  • In his two decade long career, he had directed 17 films. He began his directorial career as an assistant director for the Tamil films Porsilai (1969) and Annai Velankanni (1970).
  • Later in 1972, in directorial debut he launched Kamal Haasan in Unarchigal. It was released in 1976.
  • Later in his career, he directed many films. Some of his critically acclaimed films are Manidharil Ithanai Nirangala (1978), Dharma Yuddham (1979) which starred Rajinikanth and Amma Pillai (1990).
  • His last directed Tamil film Pathini Penna (1993) has been awarded two Tamil Nadu state awards. They are Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Film and State award for Best Dialogue Writer.

2- Ram Niwas Goel elected Speaker of Delhi Legislative Assembly

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Ram Niwas Goel was unanimously elected Speaker of the Delhi Assembly. It was announced by pro-tem Speaker Fateh Singh who presided the session of assembly for electing Speaker and Deputy Speaker of House. Goel was elected as Speaker on the first day of the two-day session of the House.

In recent Delhi Assembly election, he was elected from Shahdara constituency located in north Delhi. He defeated Bhartiya Janta Party’s Jitender Singh Shunty by a margin of over 11,000 votes.

While AAP legislator Ms. Bandana Kumari, was elected Deputy Speaker of the House.  Ms. Kumari, is an MLA from Shalimar Bagh constituency. In recent election she had defeated BJP’s Rekha Gupta by a vote margin of 10,978. Earlier in 2013 Assembly election as well, she was elected from same constituency on AAP ticket.

3- Union Ministry of Youth Affairs makes amendments in National Sports Awards Schemes

Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has amended National Sports Awards Schemes.

The amended schemes include Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award, Dhyan Chand Award and Dronacharya Awards. These amendments were based upon several suggestions made by selection committee for Arjuna Awards headed by Kapil Dev.

Henceforth, in case of Selection Committee for Arjuna Award

  • Retired Judge of Supreme Court or High Court will be its head.
  • Expert belonging to para sports will be its member. He/she will be a sports person of eminence or sports administrator.
  • It will have only one sportsperson or coach from a particular sports discipline as a member in order remove the biasness particularly in favour of a particular sports discipline.
  • Nominating agencies must send nominations of most deserving sportspersons, coaches. These nominations must be irrespective of whether they have applied to them for awards.

In order to increase the power of Selection Committee

  • The weightage for performance in sports events has been reduced from 90% to 80%.
  • While, the weightage of marks given by the Committee for factors like profile and standard of sports events has been increased from 10% to 20%.

In case of the marks criteria, more marks will be given for medals won in individual events. While, for team events marks will be computed taking into consideration strength of the team.

Henceforth, the proceedings of Selection Committee will be videographed. Detailed internal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) will be also prepared to deal with nominations received. Views of discipline experts will be also obtained for shortlisted nominations in team games.

4- Tata Power signs MoU with Russia’s SEUK to tap opportunities in the energy sector

India’s second largest private power producer Tata Power has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Russia’s largest coal producer Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK).

As part of this initial agreement, both the companies will cooperate with each other to identify and target opportunities in the energy sector. Both parties will tap the opportunities in the energy sector in Russia and other geographies to develop common mutual interest.

At present, Tata Power is generating about 8,621 MW of power of which 7,407 MW is from thermal power generation.

By signing this agreement, Tata Power is endeavoring to be a significant player in the international energy market as SUEK is reliable and world class player in the mining business.

Presently SUEK has its presence in more than 30 countries as a coal supplier.

5- Adya Sharma, cultural icon and pioneer of mobile theatre in Assam passes away

Adya Sharma

Adya Sharma, a cultural icon and pioneer of mobile theatre in Assam passed away in Nalbari town, Assam. He was 86. Sharma was pioneer in bringing innovation in the technical aspects of mobile theatre which made it more attractive and capable of staging more complex themes.

He was born in 1929 and was famously known as Guruji in the artist circle of Assam. He had made his debut  into mobile theatre in 1966 through Purbajyoti Theatre. He was also well known painter and sculpture artist in Assam. He was awarded Bishnu Prasad Rabha Award by Assam Government and Pranab Barua Award for contribution to the cultural world. Assam government also had honoured him with artiste’s pension. He is also founder of Ranghar, an organisation dedicated to promote paintin in Nalbari.

6- Takahiro Hachigo appointed as new President and CEO of Honda

Japanese automaker Honda Motor Co has appointed Takahiro Hachigo as its new President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). He will assume charge in June 2015 and replace Takanobu Ito, who had stepped down from the top most post in an unexpected move on 23 February 2015.

Prior to this appointment, Hachigo was Managing Officer of Honda Motor Co. and was appointed to this post in April 2014. He had joined Honda in 1982, and began his career in its automobile Research & Development (R&D) operations, principally as an engineer in the area of chassis design.

Since then his career with Honda had spanned in several countries like United States, China and United Kingdom.

7- 24- Oscar Awards: 87th Academy Awards

The 87th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) was held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

The Academy Awards (commonly referred as Oscars) were presented in twenty four categories.  They are

8- 3rd Tortoise Festival organised in Assam

Key facts

  • Hajong Lake is popularly known as the tortoise lake, is a natural habitat of the few unique tortoise i.e. hill terrapins.
  • It is situated 80 kilometres north of Haflong in the remote Dima Hasao district.
  • Hajong Lake is the only natural tortoise habitat in Assam, where some endangered species of tide-water tortoise of north-east India are still living.
  • It is facing a hostile condition due to ever-growing human intervention in their habitats and at present, there are around 400 to 500 tortoises dwelling in this Lake.
